Located just 10 minutes from Boonah and our Old Church Bed and Breakfast is the historic town of Kalbar. Nestled in the picturesque and fertile Fassifern valley, today Kalbar is home to around 1000 people. Some of the old wooden buildings date to the late 1880s when German migrants moved to the area.
Some of the early buildings include:
White Chapel Kalbar – (originally Uniting Church) – C.1882
Wiss Cottage – C. 1890
Stark House – C. 1908
Kalbar Post Office – C. 1897
Police Station and Cells – C. 1899
The Royal Hotel – C. 1900
Wiss Emporium – C. 1909
Wiss House – C. 1912
St. John’s Lutheran Church - 1930.
Farming is still a staple of the town today, with lucerne hay and a variety of vegetable crops still grown in the area. Kalbar is also home to the very popular famous Sunflower Festival in April.
There are several gift shops open later in the week and on weekends. For foodies there is a country butcher, a fruit & veg shop with local produce and a café with lots of home made goodies. The Royal Hotel and Lovetts are popular for meals or coffee. Just 5 minutes from Kalbar is the popular Scenic Rim Farm Shop & Café and Elderflower Farm (gifts and fresh flowers).
Each October Kalbar comes alive with the Kalbar Country Day the 3rd Saturday in October - this year 15th October. This is a free event and is a great family day out for all ages, so put it on your calendar!
The main street will be bursting with market stalls selling food, cakes, jams, arts & crafts, plants and so much more. There will be a bush poet breakfast from 7am, rides for the kids, vintage displays, local bands, multi-draw raffle, carrot tossing competition, country games and displays, hay scramble and fun and entertainment for all ages. Take a little drive around the area and see how many 'hay bale sculptures' you can spot.
